본 연구는 한국 개신교의 반지성주의의 행태를 비판하면서 교회의 공적 참여를 위해 공적 이성(public reason)으로서 종교적 이성(religious reason)의 가능성 제안한다. 신앙과 이성은 분리되지 않으며 후기세속사회에서 상호보완적인참여가 가능하다. 먼저 리처드 호프스태터(Richard Hofstadter)를 통해 미국 기독교의 반지성주의를 살피고 미국의 영향하에 있는 한국 교회의 반지성주의적특징을 설명할 것이다. 또한 종교적 이성이 어떻게 공적 이성에 기여 할 수 있는지 살피기 위해 존 롤즈(John Rawls)와 위르겐 하버마스(Jürgen Habermas)의공적 이성 개념을 살핀 후 종교적 이성의 자리를 찾아볼 것이다. 롤즈는 ‘중첩적합의’의 과정에서 합당한 교설로서 종교의 참여 가능성을 열어 놓으며, 하버마스는 공론장에서 ‘의사소통적 합리성’을 담보한 종교의 번역 가능성을 제안한다. 이들을 통해 공적 이성의 주요 특징인 상호성과 포용성을 확인할 수 있을 것이다. 더 나아가 종교적 이성의 공적 이성의 가능성을 제안하고자 미로슬라브 볼프(Miroslav Volf)의 ‘확대된 사고’와 ‘이중 보기’로 통해 종교적 이성의 ‘합리성’, ‘포용성’, ‘공공성’을 제시할 것이다.
Abstract
This study criticizes the antiintellectualism of Korean Protestantism and pro- poses the possibility of religious reason as a public reason for the public participation of the church. The religious reason is not separated from public reason, and it is possible to participate complementarily in a post-secular society. First, through Richard Hofstadter, I will explore the anti-intellectualism of American Christianity and deal with the situation of the Korean church. In addition, to ex- plain how religious reason can contribute to public reason, I will investigate John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas’ concepts of public reason. Rawls accepts the possi- bility of religious participation as a reasonable doctrine in the process of ‘overlapping consensus.’ Habermas also suggests participation in religion that guarantees ‘communication rationality’ in the public sphere. Through these, reli- gious reason could be a component of the public sphere. Finally, this study examines Volf’s “enlarged thinking” and “double vision” to suggest “reasonableness,” “inclusiveness,” and “publicity” in religious reason.
