Abstract
Liberal theorists emphasize that the liberal democratic ideals such as freedom, equality, and toleration are effectively preserved and promoted if religion is excluded from public discourse. They hold fast to an airtight wall between religion and state, and attempt to confine religious arguments to private or non-public realm. Rorty thinks that liberal democracy is not likely to survive without the privatization of religion, since religion can be a ‘conversation-stopper’ in the public discourse and conversation is essential for democracy to work. If religion is allowed to engage public affairs, Rorty worries that it will create and intensify conflicts among various kinds of moral and religious claims. Is such worry fair enough? The protection of religious liberty and the prohibition of governmental establishment of religion are acknowledged to be one of the most important liberal democratic elements that endorses separation of religion and state. What kind of separation, and to what extent? Is there no possibility of the two being mixed in the public sphere? Reviewing Rorty’s position critically, I wish to explore some appropriate liberal democratic principles that are to be considered in the areas of religion and state, particularly the roles that religious persons and organizations can properly play in the public affairs of a society with a democratically constituted state that both protects the ‘free exercise of religion’ and also prohibits any ‘religious establishment.’ To fulfill this task, I will examine Richard Rorty, Robert Audi, Nicholas Wolterstorff and David Hollenbach, with particular attention to the latter three’s response to the former’s view of religion’s role in the public sphere. In doing this, I attempt to produce several representative types which justify religion’s public participation. I conclude with some ethical suggestions which can contribute to enriching Christians’ participation in the public political discourse.
