‘유아’ 대상 질적연구의 연구윤리와 진정성

본 연구는 ‘유아’를 대상으로 하는 질적연구에 있어서의 연구 윤리(ethics)와 연구의 진정성(authenticity)에 대하여 고찰해보고자 하는 목적으로 시작되었다. 질적연구자는 연구의 시작부터 관찰하고, 인터뷰하고, 자료를 정리하고, 글을 쓰는 모든 과정에서, 그리고 심지어 연구가 종료된 이후에도 많은 도덕적 딜레마에 직면하게 된다. 이에 많은 연구단체에서는 연구자의 윤리성에 대한 지침을 내고 있으나 연구대상자로서의 유아에 대한 윤리적 보호는 미비하다고 할 수 있다. 더욱이 이러한 지침은 연구자 개인이 현장에서 시시각각 당면하게 되는 도덕적 문제에 대한 모든 것을 해결해주는 해법이 되지는 못한다. 결국 연구자는 자신의 앞에 놓인 선택을 전적으로 책임져야 하는 당사자이기 때문이다. 연구자와 연구 참여자와의 관계성은 위계적 권력 관계를 창조해내고 있으며,연구 윤리의 시작점이라고 할 수 있는 연구동의서조차도 하나의 권력 메커니즘으로 작용할 가능성이 있는 양면성을 갖고 있다. ‘연구 참여자’라는 미명으로 지칭된 유아들은 연구의 객체로서 소비될 가능성이 많다. 이러한 문제들은 유아를보는 관점의 패러다임을 바꾸지 않는 한 해결되기 어려운 문제이다. ‘사회적 행위자’로서 유아를 이해하고 있는가, ‘진정한 연구 참여자’로서 유아를 보고 있는가,그리고 그들이 내는 목소리를 제대로 듣고 있으며, 그들이 표현하는 몸짓을 제대로 바라보고 있는가는 연구자가 수집한 정보가 진정성 있게 해석되고 있는지, 그리고 연구자의 글쓰기가 아이들의 사회적 맥락 안에서 이루어지고 있는지를 드러내는 중요한 바탕이 된다. 또한, 서구 사회의 발달적 개념 안에서 존재하는 보편적 유아로서가 아니라, 각기 다른 다양성을 지닌 사회적 존재로서, 그리고 자신들의 독특한 문화적 맥락 속에 존재하는 개인으로서 유아를 이해하지 않는다면 유아를 대상으로 한 질적연구의 진정한 의미는 퇴색될 것이다.
Abstract
This research attempts to discuss the ethical issues related to qualitative research with children. Qualitative researchers confront many kinds of ethical dilemma while observing, interviewing, collecting, analysing, and writing. As for the ethical issue, many academic associations and communities tried to provide guidelines on the ethical conduct of research. However, these are still not enough to protect the children involved in researches. The researcher has to take complete responsibility for ethical decisions made while in the field. The relationship between the researcher and the research subjects creates a hierarchy of power, and even 'the research consent form' produces the power mechanisms. Children tend to be consumed as 'objects of research'under the good name of 'research participants.' These kind of ethical issues can not be solved unless the paradigm of perspective about children is changed. It is important for researchers to understand that children are 'socialactors' and consider that children are real participants. Questions must be asked about whose voices are being represented. We must listen to the children's voice, observe what children truly say through their body, and interpret the collected data faithfully. Writing must reflect the children's social context. We need to understand 'the child' as an individual existence in cultural context.
