Abstract
Studies involving children as participants sometimes conflict with the right of participation and protection, so a more ethical balance is required than any other research. This study analyzed 16 research that observed or interviewed children based on the basic ethical principles of the belmont report. The study findings are as follows. First, some research did not provide enough information to child participants, and it was difficult to find efforts that respected children's spontaneity. In particular, in research conducted with preschoolers, children with disabilities, and children residing in child welfare facilities, the informed consent of children was often overlooked. Second, there were many research that did not assess in advance the risks and benefits that children would receive from participating in the research. Third, in some research, the selection of children for research participants was not fair. Based on these results, this study suggested prior ethical education for child participants, ‘substantial informed consent’ through provision of sufficient information and comprehension, debriefing to restore damage caused by the research.
