근현대 조선에 거주한 서양인들의 ‘언어의식’과 한국어에 대한 관점 연구
A study on 'Language Awareness' of Western People Living in Joseon of the Modern and Contemporary Period and Their Perspective on Korean Language

This study was conducted to closely look into linguistic consciousness and perspectives of Korean language among western researchers, who lived in Joseon Dynasty of the modern era by analyzing Korean language-related academic journals and teaching books, news articles, etc. published for western people in the modern age. At that time, the whole Asia, including Joseon was groaning under imperialism, and this imperialism penetrated in the form of learning and religion as well as a war or invasion. This paper takes a look at perceptions of Korea and Korean language among western researchers via research papers written by western missionaries and contributions published in newspapers or magazines, and the socio-cultural context and meaning of these materials. Missionaries of the time had an opportunity to directly experience and observe Korean people and Korean traditional culture living in Korea for a long period of time, unlike diplomats or travelers that stayed here for a short time. Also, enlightenment of western values and ‘civilization’ other than a religious purpose of christianizing people in Joseon Dynasty were important aims to these missionaries. This paper aims to comprehend their consciousness and perspectives of Korea and Korean language by analyzing and reinterpreting materials, which can display these values of these missionaries.
