Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the human-related mimetic words listed in the 《Classification Dictionary for Korean Onomatopoeia and Mimetic Word》 and select basic headwords. One of the unique features of the Korean language is the development of onomatopoeic and mimetic words. Nevertheless, there is still no specialized dictionary for onomatopoeic and mimetic words. In this regard, this paper aims to study on the 《Classification Dictionary for Korean Onomatopoeia and Mimetic Word》, which contains 7,656 onomatopoeic and mimetic words. Although this dictionary was published by the Yanbian Institute of Linguistic Studies and includes some North Korean vocabularies. It was selected as a reference because it provides the largest collection of Korean onomatopoeic and mimetic words, and recognizes the issue of simply organizing words by their consonant-vowel order. It also attempts to classify the words based on their semantic fields, considering the unique characteristics of onomatopoeic and mimetic words. The 《Classification Dictionary for Korean Onomatopoeia and Mimetic Word》 is broadly categorized into onomatopoeic words and mimetic words, and further subdivided into various semantic fields. In this paper, among the subcategories of mimetic words, 2,639 human-related mimetic words are first examined by their semantic fields. After selecting basic symbolic words, this paper will add homonyms and finalize the selection of basic headwords, referring to the 《Standard Korean Language Dictionary》. First, through the process of excluding consonant-vowel alternations and reduplicative forms, 863 basic headwords were selected from a total of 2,639 symbolic words, focusing on the words with similar meanings within the same semantic field. Second, the 863 symbolic words were entered into the Excel program, and words with the same or similar forms, including reduplicative or extended forms, were collectively treated as polysemes. As a result, 574 symbolic words were extracted from the original 863 symbolic words. Third, all 2,639 human-related symbolic words were compared with the 《Standard Korean Language Dictionary》 to identify homonyms with the same form but different meanings, and 96 homonyms were added. The future task is to refine the definitions of symbolic words related to humans, reclassify the semantic fields, and organize systematically the symbolic words within each field.
