A Study on the Selection and Representation of Onomatopoeia in Korean Learners' Dictionaries

이 연구의 목적은 『한국어기초사전』의 의성어 목록을 추출하고 말뭉치 분석을 통해 고빈도 의성어를 보완해 목록의 적절성을 재고하는 데에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해『한국어기초사전』의 의성어 표제어를 정리한 뒤,『표준국어대사전』 및 ‘교재 말뭉치’, ‘모두의 말뭉치’를 비롯한 말뭉치 자료와 비교·분석하였다. 또한 선행 연구와 『표준국어대사전』의 의성어 목록을 추가로 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 『한국어기초사전』에는 실제 사용 빈도가 낮은 어휘가 포함되어 있는 반면, 말뭉치에서 고빈도로 확인되는 일부 의성어는 누락되어 있었다. 그러나 의성어의 전반적 빈도가 낮아 빈도만으로 등재의 타당성을 평가하기는 어려웠다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 『표준국어대사전』 과의 대조를 통해 저빈도 어휘나 대체 가능한 어휘의 삭제, 그리고 실제 사용 빈도가 높은 어휘의 추가 등재를 제안하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to reexamine the list of onomatopoeic words in the Basic Korean Dictionary and to enhance it by supplementing high-frequency onomatopoeia based on corpus analysis. To achieve this goal, the study first organizes the current list of onomatopoeic entries in the Basic dictionary, and then evaluates the validity of this list by comparing it with the Standard dictionary and relevant corpus frequency data. The corpora used for analysis consist primarily of two sources: the “Korean Textbook Corpus” and the “Everyone’s Corpus (Modu Corpus).” Additionally, the onomatopoeia lists from prior research that provide concrete inventories, as well as the onomatopoeia list from the Standard dictionary, were compiled for comparative analysis. The analysis revealed that some onomatopoeic words listed in the current Basic dictionary do not appear in the corpora, while conversely, certain high-frequency onomatopoeic words in the corpora were absent from the Basic dictionary. Since the overall frequency of onomatopoeia in the corpora is relatively low, it is difficult to assess the appropriateness of dictionary entries based solely on frequency. Therefore, this study also compares the Standard dictionary’s list of onomatopoeia to supplement the existing entries. Based on the findings, the study proposes the deletion of words that are either extremely low in frequency or can be replaced by already-registered equivalents. Conversely, words with high frequency in actual corpora are proposed as additional entries. Furthermore, this study discusses the essential elements that should be included in the microstructural description of onomatopoeic headwords in dictionaries.
