초록

M. Nicolas Sarkozy, ex president of France, gave a speech at Dakar, capital of Senegal, in 2007. His speech provoked a wave of protest from the francophone intellectuals because of the racists and anachronical views on Africa. This study attempts to reveal the reason of the protest along with analysis of his speech text. Sarkozy wanted to deliver in his message that French people need to accept atrocity and inhumanity that their country had committed in the past and to overcome the past constructing the close cooperation between France and Africa. Regarding the slavery and colonialism, Sarkozy attempted to relativize the consequence and attribute the tragedy to Africa. His perspectives on Africa repeats the old ideology of imperialism emphasizing the absence of historicity of Africa. His view on the absence of historicity of Africa results from the ignorance of social science progress in African studies and his indifference on African artistic production. The ignorance and indifference constitutes the principal reasons to fail to convince the African audience.
