상고르(L.S. Senghor)의 ‘아프리카 사회주의’와 권위주의: 1940~50년대 세네갈 독립과정을 중심으로

초록

본 연구는 세네갈 독립과정에서 탈식민주의의 주요한 토대를 제공했던 상고르의 아프리카 사회주의를 중심으로 권위주의와의 상관관계를 살핀다. 주지하다시피 탈식민주의는 서구의 제국주의적 식민질서에 대한 일차적인 ‘저항’을 넘어, 피식민 국가 본연의 역사까지도 ‘해방’할 수 있는 역사적ﾷ실천적 역량을 내포한다. 그러나 상고르는 세네갈의 탈식민 독립 국가 건설의 과정에서 권력의 권위주의화를 직ﾷ간접적으로 추진하거나 심지어 강요하기도 했다. 이러한 정치적 이력들이 그의 탈식민주의 노선, 특히 아프리카 사회주의 노선과 어떻게 연결되는 것인가? 이러한 질문을 바탕으로 본 연구는 상고르가 주장한 아프리카 사회주의 내ﾷ외부에 권위주의를 정당화하거나 혹은 유인하는 요소가 개입하고 있는 것은 아닌지, 따라서 이를 바탕으로 세네갈 탈식민주의 노선의 주류를 형성했던 상고르의 아프리카 사회주의가 실패하게 된 역사적 요인을 1940~50년대 세네갈 독립과정을 중심으로 살펴본다.

Abstract

This study examines the correlation between authoritarianism and African socialism of Léopold S. Senghor. As you may be aware, postcolonial and/or decolonial arguments resist against the colonial order of the imperialist West, as well as it has the historical and practical capacity to liberate the history of the colonial state. Senghor, who was the first President of the Republic of Senegal (1960–1980) and a member of the French Parliament in the days of French colonial rule, was a leading figure in the independence movement of Senegal. His political legacy has generated much praise, but also much criticism. How do these political careers relate to his African socialism? This study examines whether there are any elements that justified the authoritarianism of Senghor in and outside of his African socialism which formed the mainstream ideology of the independence process of Senegal in the 1940s and 1950s.
