Abstract

This study calls into question the meaning of showing films from 'black Africa' at Cannes International Film Festival, one of the most important film events in the world. Since the 1960s, the French government established and executed the production aid system for the films from this part of the world as a strategy of francophonie. Cannes festival, by showing these films, contributed inevitably to the maintenance of the French cinematographic hegemony in the world. Nevertheless, it is still true and meaningful in the History of cinema that Cannes supported the art of cinema in discovering new talents in this region and putting them on the international stage. As Cannes’ global positioning strengthened over time, the link between the festival and the French government's aid system seems to have loosened. This paper brings into light that Cannes film festival, despite its diplomatic and political positioning, has been the most important partner for the black African cinema.
