Abstract
This study aims to examine the mise-en-scène of neocolonial spaces and the postcolonialism in Ousmane Sèmbene's Borom Sarret(1963) and La noire de...(1966). In Borom Sarret, his camera shows the poor autochtones' everyday life in documentary style, before showing the 'Plateau', zone of the local elites and neocolonialists. The dichotomy of tradition and modernity is formally expressed by the contrast of audiovisual elements such as landscape, music or camera angle. In La noire de..., the criticism of neocolonialism is mainly reflected in the mise-en-scène of the interior of the French villa in Antibes, where the main character, the black girl, is obliged to live like a slave. Her neocolonial situation results from the separation of the spaces, which creates the otherness of the girl, as well as the progressive disappearance of the exterior mediterranean landscape on the screen. The last sequence transforms the Medina of Dakar into a symbolical space which tries to reverse the present situation, with the help of alternative editing and objectivation of the French patron. In this two films, Sembene criticizes the neocolonial reality after the Independance of African countries and asks black Africans to realise their situation by means of formalistic as well as realistic mise-en-scène of spaces.
