Abstract

This study intends to bring into light the originality of Malian film master Souleymane Cissé's work in the context of post-colonial African cinema of the 1960's and 1970's. His three films The Girl, The Porter and The Wind, which constitute the main corpus of this article, distinctively reflect the neo-colonialist vision and didactic style, which were the prevailing characteristics of African films after the Independence. Cissé utilizes popular characters from socially disadvantaged groups to educate the public, so that they can easily understand and empathize with his political arguments. His characters represent societal force rather than private individuals. Nevertheless, this Malian master's work surpasses simple or immediate educational aims and shows transcendance. It distinguishes itself from his contemporary filmmakers' especially in introducing traditional rituals and symbols, initiating a new trend surpassing 'social realism'. The Wind is exemplary in this regard and foreshadows the changes in the director's search for African identity in his later works. While situated in the general and indispensible movement of didactism of the early African cinema, Cisse's symbolic and magical mise-en-scène lays the foundation of his original cinematic world and demonstrates his authorism.
