Abstract

As a result of the referendum in June 2016, UK voters chose to leave the EU. Support for Brexit stimulated discussion on anti-immigration and racism, and among the working-class Brexit supporters, anti-immigration and racist sentiments have been widely disseminated. In previous studies, Brexit advocates have been portrayed as 'left behind', a group which shares anti-immigration agenda and responds to ultranationalists’ racist incitement. This study aims to explain that the wave of anti-immigration and racist feeling in the UK reflects the British specificity of the phenomenon that takes place not only in the UK but throughout Europe. The European Union/The EU adopted ‘Monetarism’ introduced by then-UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1980 as the main operating principle of the economic union. Moreover, the European Union, combined with the NATO system, triggered Europe’s refugee crisis, and the opposition to the EU was intensified due to deepening inequality, the growing number of immigrants and the refugee crisis. Since the 1980s, the UK has weakened traditional manufacturing industries by promoting economic growth centered on the financial industry. In particular, the industrial collapse in the central North England, where manufacturing was concentrated, increased the unemployment rate and lowered the employment rate in the region. As the result, the working class became more reliant on unemployment benefits and welfare benefits, and all of the social indicators have shown a substantial gap between the North and the South. In the process of overcoming the financial crisis in 2008, the UK government invested astronomical finances to save the financial industry, while implementing austerity measures and reducing the welfare benefits, which further weakened the traditional working class. This was also a measure taken in accordance with the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact which highlighted the significance of fiscal austerity. This process enabled European ultranationalists who incited anti- immigration policy to gain popularity. This paper argues that the British working class supported Brexit as a result of such complex forces and that if such an institution and system were maintained support for Brexit would spread throughout the European Union.
