Abstract
In the 19th century, Buddhism became known to the West and was becoming a concern of many intellectuals. This article reveals how a German indologist interested in Buddhism came to understand Buddhism. Often, the history of Buddhism in the West is regarded as a representative example of the influence of non-Western intelligence on Western society. It is considered as the epitome of "the Eastern Ideas that enlightened Western Society." But there is no denying that Western intellectuals understand Buddhism in their own way from their point of view. Since Buddhism was known, they have understood Buddhism differently according to their needs. Sometimes it was considered a true religion, and sometimes it was an Asian religion with many problems. So, it should be said that cultural prejudice was inevitably forced to intervene in Western Buddhist understanding. In the late 19th century, the indologist in Austrian Wien Leopold von Schrader was a rare Buddhist-friendly intellectual. He was born into a German Protestant family in the Baltic region. However, as a young man, he suddenly turned away from Christianity and accepted Buddhism. He was paying attention to Buddhism not just as an academic concern, but as a matter of faith. In fact, his approach to Buddhism was due to a change in his religious perception. He thought Christianity was in crisis in Europe and was looking for alternative religions. And he thought Buddhism was an excellent religion with religious integrity. But his choice did not last long. He declared himself a Christian again, and this time he argued for the superiority of Christianity. He became completely convinced of his faith in Christian salvation. At the same time, he began to think of Buddhism as a nihilistic religion and came to perceive Buddhism negatively as a religion of "escaping reality." So, he reached a conclusion completely opposite to the belief in the religious integrity of Buddhism, which was seen in the early days. In his appearance like this, he showed surely religious and cultural limitations that could not be overcome as a European.
