Abstract
In the late 19th century the German indologists, especially Buddhologists considered their discipline as a typical branch of human science. They were full of enthusiasm about Buddhism. They studied Buddhism and provided translations which non-academics considered eloquent and which increased the exposure of Buddhism in Germany. Yet, it is at the same time an undeniable fact that there was a limit in their perceptions of India and Buddhism as its religion. While their work were linguistically and aesthetically refined, from today’s vantage point it appears to be so full of race theory and racism preconception. They were even among the foremost proponents of race theory and racial hierarchy. The aim of this paper is to trace the works of Hermann Oldenberg as a leading Buddhologist in Germany and to examine the role of the German academicians in creating a position for India in the racial imagination. It explores the motivations behind his attraction to India and the resulting interpretation of the indian religion ancient times. His work on Buddhism can be situated in the Indomania of German academicians. So, this paper demonstrates that he placed India and its religion on an Aryan pedestal.
