Abstract

This paper examines the time and background of Kim Yusin’s posthumous enthronement as King Heungmu, based on the articles that appear in his biography in Samguk Sagi and the “Kim Yusin” section in Samguk Yusa. The discussion is summarized as follows. 1) Regarding the timing of the posthumous reward, Samguk Sagi reports it was during the reign of King Heungdeok, while Samguk Yusa reports it was during the reign of King Gyeongmyeong. 2) Most previous studies have followed the tradition in Samguk Sagi, but no special reason is found for Kim Yusin to have been posthumously honored as King during the reign of King Heungdeok. 3) Rather, other historical materials showing the situation after the reign of King Heungdeok reveal that even in the late 9th century, Kim Yusin was still recognized as a ‘minister’ and did not have the status of king. 4) The article in Samguk Yusa that Kim Yusin was posthumously awarded by King Gyeongmyeong is possible if we only look at the circumstances of the time, but it is difficult to say for sure that it was at that time due to the lack of conclusive evidence. 5) The reason why Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa report the exact date of the posthumous reward differently is probably because they each misunderstood the name of ‘King Gyeonghwi(景暉大王)’, who might have appeared in the original historical records. Gyeonghwi is the name of King Sindeok, the father of King Gyeongmyeong. In Samguk Sagi, he was mistaken for King Heungdeok, who had the same sounding name, Gyeonghwi(景徽). And in Samguk Yusa, he was mistakenly reported as King Gyeongmyeong, due to the fact that Gyeonghwi and Gyeongmyeong(景明) have the same meaning. 6) During the reign of King Shindeok, Silla was facing a national crisis due to pressure from Later Baekje and Taebong. Therefore, the direct background of the posthumous reward may have been that Kim Yusin, who had been the hero of the unification of the three kingdoms and a symbolic figure of national defense, was promoted from the position of a subject to that of a great king in order to receive his protection and overcome the crisis.
