기독교적 관점에서 토니 모리슨의 『낙원』에 나타난 희생양 메커니즘 극복 의지 연구

초록

본 논문은 토니 모리슨의 소설 『낙원』에 드러난 희생양 메커니즘의 폭력을 드러내고자 한다. 모리슨은 소설에서 인종주의적인 미국 주류 사회뿐만 아니라 차별받고 억압당하는 흑인 공동체 내 희생양 메커니즘에 대한 문제의식을 드러내며 이러한 폭력을 멈추고자 하는 등장인물들의 모습을 묘사해왔다. 특히 모리슨과 공통된 문제 의식과 종교적 가치관을 공유한 문학비평가이자이자 인류학자인 르네 지라르의 희생양 메커니즘에 대한 통찰과 이 소설에 나타난 시민권 시기 비폭력 저항 운동에 대한 고찰을 바탕으로 모리슨의 작품에서 등장 인물들이 희생양 메커니즘의 실체를 자각하고 극복하고자 행동하는 데 있어서 미국 흑인의 기독교적 신앙이 담당하는 역할을 조명하고자 했다. 지라르는 문학은 사회과학보다 인간 삶의 진실을 더 잘 표현하고 있다고 지적했고 소설과 각종 에세이에서 모리슨은 지라르와 공통적으로 인간 사회의 폭력과 ‘희생’이라는 주제에 천착해 왔다. 희생양 메커니즘과 같은 사회적 폭력을 극복하는 데 있어서 그리스도교적인 가치관에 깊이 공감했던 모리슨 소설의 도덕적이고 종교적인 비전에 대한 연구는 지라르의 문화인류학에서 새로운 통찰을 얻을 수 있으리라 생각된다.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Christian faith in exposing the falsity of the scapegoating mechanism in Toni Morrison’s novel Paradise, aided by René Girard’s ideas. In Paradise, Morrison portrays how the attempts of the town leaders in the all-black town of Ruby to scapegoat the women in the nearby Convent backfire as many townspeople still cherish and emulate Christ, whose crucifixion exposed the falsity and transience of the peace brought about by scapegoating. Drawing on Girardian thoughts and the nonviolent Civil Rights movement, this study aims to shed light on the role of Black Christianity in exposing and overcoming the scapegoat mechanism in Morrison’s novel, thereby closely examining Morrison’s moral and religious vision as depicted in her works.
