Abstract
This study aims to discuss the convent females’ modes of behaviors as a metaphor of both subversion to the black male-dominated society and healing of individual traumas in Toni Morrison's Paradise from Michael Bakhtin’s perspectives of carnivalesque subjects. In this novel, the female characters, such as Consolata, Mavis, Gigi, and Pallas are similar to Bakhtin’s carnivalesque subjects who are characteristic of autonomy, openness, heterogeneity, diversity and sensuality. They have various backgrounds in terms of race, culture, experience, and consciousness. Therefore, they don’t belong to the uniform racial-sexual code of the black male-dominated society, the pure-blooded skin group. They are open-minded and inclusive in terms of gender, race, idea, and behavior. They share their past traumas, acknowledge them, recognize similarities and differences between them, and open the interconnections between them. Through these ways, they also create paradoxical and ironical relationships, such as homogeneity in heterogeneity, harmony in conflict, congruity in incongruity, and order in chaos, as do the carnivalesque subjects who echo the figures of unruly bodily and social exchange. Their behavioral modes, finally, make the convent a healing paradise and act as subversive forces against the black male-dominant society.
