Abstract
This paper examines Toni Morrison’s third novel, Song of Solomon, focusing on the suffering and the triumph of the innocent sacrificial lamb with the help of René Girard’s theory. Given Morrison’s own appreciation of the significant Christian influence on African-American life and culture, René Girard’s theory of scapegoat mechanism appears relevant to illuminate Morrison’s religious dimensions of the novel. Finally, this study attempts to situate the novel in the contemporary context of non-violent protests during the Civil Rights movement in 1960s, thereby transcending the limitation of applying ahistorical Girardian framework to Morrison’s rich literary works.
