Celebrated Helper and Disappeared Hero ― The Orphan of Zhao and Voltairean Adaptation

본고는 기군상(13세기말 활동)이 지은 원곡 ＜조씨고아＞를 분석하면서 기존의 서구 담론과 다른 새로운 영웅서사 모델을 제안한다. 작품의 표면적 주인공은 아버지의 원수를 갚아가는 孤兒이지만 중심인물은 작품 전편에 등장하면서 다양한 역할을 하는 조력자 程嬰이다. 이와 같이 복수보다는 도덕적 의무, 영웅보다 조력자의 역할이 부각되는 ＜조씨고아＞는 서구 영웅서사 모델과 상당히 다르다는 점에서 중국문학에서 영웅서사 전반을 새롭게 고찰할 필요가 있음을 보여준다. 다음으로 기군상의 원작과 볼테르의 번안극을 비교하면서 원작의 程嬰이 번안극에서 잠티Zamti로 각색된 문화적, 사상적 배경을 고찰한다. 볼테르의 번안극은 배경설정이나 내용면에서 원작과 상당히 다르다. 형식면에서 볼테르는 사건이 한 장소에서 하루에 끝나도록 설정하였는데 이것은 17세기 프랑스 극작가 사이에서 유행하였던 三一致法則의 영향 때문이다. 내용면에서도 원작은 춘추전국시대 두 가문의 대결 구도에서 번안극은 징기스칸이 중국을 정복할 당시 몽골인과 한인의 대립에 주안을 두고 있다. 번안극은 징기스칸이 중국인에게 교화되는 등 지나치게 중국을 미화했다고 오리엔탈리즘적인 시각에서 비판 받을 수 있지만 이러한 모화주의적 경향은 볼테르의 종교적 회의주의에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 볼테르는 神의 설정 없이 징기스칸 같은 야만인도 도덕적으로 교화될 수 있다는 점에서 중국문명에 관심을 보인 것이다. 조국애와 가족애 사이에서 고민하는 잠티 역시 사회와 인성을 고민하였던 볼테르가 자신의 윤리적 난제를 작품 속에 투영시킨 결과물로 보아야 한다.
