The second predicates of verb resultative construction(VC) and de construction (VdeC), which are mostly adjectives, have been considered as buyu(補語) which express ‘result’ in Chinese. In this paper, however, I will argue that the buyu in these two constructions actually behave differently, specifically, the buyu of the de construction doesn’t really express ‘result’, but behaves like an adverbial modifier. From the perspective of the typology, there are two concepts that have similarities semantically, i.e. secondary predicate and adverbial modifier. But they are quite different syntactically. That is, the former is an adjective (phrase) without any formal changes, but the later has formal changes, e.g., ‘-ly’ in English, and the buyu of de can be stative adjectives, complex expressions, etc, which are depictive and subjective. Based on the differences of these two, I will propose that Chinese buyu of VC and VdeC are corresponding to secondary predicate and post-posing adverbial modifier respectively, and de is the adverbial marker in Chinese. This classification will give a new solution for the Chinese buyu, whilst also explaining that de can express not only result, but also degree, state, etc.
