초록
The auxiliary verb “Yinggai(应该)” could be interpreted either deontically or epistemically, and it has different “Selective Restriction” for its objects. For instance, when the verbal object consists of structures such as “subject-predicate structure, verb reduplication, predicate-complement structure of cohesive type, serial verb construction, Shuo(说)+X, Shi(是)+VP”, “Yinggai (应该)” is used for deontic modality. In contrast, when the verbal object consists of structures like “predicate-complement structure of combined type, Shi(是) + NP, Bu(不) + VP” or takes a tense-aspect marker, “Yinggai(应该)” is used for epistemic modality. According to our theory, there are some differences of the directing objects between these two modalities. On the one hand, because the directing object of deontic modality is “action”, it conceptually has “controllability” features. On the other hand, the directing object of epistemic modality is a “proposition”, so it has “process” features. Therefore, deontic modal’s “Yinggai(应该)” generally repels non-controllability events, epistemic modal’s “Yinggai(应该)” generally repels non-process events.
