서양철학의 사유틀과 희랍어

본 논문의 동서양 철학의 사유법에서의 차이를, 그들이 사용한 언어에서 찾아보려는 시도이다. 필자는 대체로 전통적인 사유선재론보다는 언어 선재론에 공감한다. 자연 언어는 인간의 사유를 위한 포괄적이면서 원초적인 틀이며, 우리가 선험적 범주의 개념을 인정할 수 있다면, 바로 자연 언어의 기본틀이 그에 해당할 것이다. 자연 언어는 진화의 결과로서 경험적 존재이기는 하나, 감각적 지각이나, 자연, 또는 신체에 대한 경험까지도 어떤 언어를 가지고 있느냐에 영향을 받는다는 점에서 그것은 선험적이라 할 수 있는 측면이 있다. 서양철학의 사고 방식을 분석 환원주의적 태도, 진리 개념의 원초성, 의미론의 발달, 심신의 명확한 구분, 추상체와 보편자의 개념 발달 등으로 특징 지우며, 이들의 특성을 서구 고전어인 고대 희랍어의 제 특색들에 기초하여 설명하려 한다. 필자는 서양철학에 영향을 준 희랍의 또는 유럽어의 특징들로, 굴절어, 술어적 구문과 be-동사의 주축성, 음성 문자적 언어관, 정관사의 발달 등을 지적하며 서구 철학의 사유방식에 대한 함의를 논한다. 이 과정에서 동양 철학적 사고의 특색 및 고대 한문의 특징들과 비교한다. 이를 통해 언어가 철학적 사고방식에 깊은 영향을 주었음을 논하고자 한다. 본 논문이 한문에서 주목하는 특징들은 상형문자적 언어관, Be 동사의 미발달, 진리개념의 미형성, 정관사의 부재 등이다.
Abstract
The aim of this article is to explain the characteristics of western philosophy's way of thinking in terms of the features of its own classical language, i.e., of Greek language. The western philosophy's way of thinking are characterized as having, 1) analytic and reductionistic tendency, 2) the notion of truth as primitive concept, 3) well-developped semantics, 4) concept of abstract entities and universals. It is suggested that we can find the origins of these characteristics of western way of thinking in peculiarities of European language, especially those of ancient Greek language, in which western philosopies have been done. Major features of the language which have contributed to formation of western way of thinking are as follows: 1) its inflecting structure, 2) predicative sentence structure, 3) centrality of Be verb, 4) phonetic notation as opposed to China's pictographic one, 5) the use of articles. In the course of linguistic explanation, I make a comparison between the features of western language with those of ancient Chinese language, and between western way of philosophizing and eastern way of thinking.
