Abstract
The aim of this paper is to understand the tradition of Roman reception of Greek philosophy by examining the way of Cicero’s Latin translation of Plato’s Timaeus. In his works, Cicero revealed his desires to translate Greek philosophical terms into Latin. But his desire was confined neither in the passive following of Greek thought nor its imitation. Rather his desire was focused on the philosophical appropriation by way of active interpretations accompanied with critiques. By examining and analyzing Cicero’s translation of Timaeus, I in this paper expect to reveal some important aspects of the Latinization of Greek philosophy. To do so, this paper will bring into focus some essential differences between Plato’s Timaeus and Cicero’s translation of it. Those differences will be examined in the dramatic form of both dialogues, the nuance of likely story (or the meaning of probability), the relation between intelligible forms and matters, the disappearance of divine craftsman (demiurge), and the different attitudes on empirical knowledge.
