2006년 『유다 복음서』가 발표되었을 때 대부분의 학자들은 유다가 『유다 복음서』의 영웅이라고 생각하였다. 이레나이우스가 유다가 『유다 복음서』의 영웅이라고 이야기했기 때문이다. 다수의 학자들이 이렇게 생각하였던 또 다른 이유가 있는데 2-3세기에 쓰인 여러 외경 문서들이 원정통 교회에 의해서 낮추어 졌던 인물들의 복원을 시도하였다. 대표적인 외경 문서인 『야고보 제 1 계시록』, 『토마스 복음서』, 『막달라 마리아 복음서』 등은 주의 형제 야고보, 토마스, 막달라 마리아 등을 주인공으로 설정하고, 그들이 예수의 수제자이거나 후계자라고 천명하였다. 그러나 불과 몇 달 뒤에 이른바 ‘수정주의’가 등장하였다. 2006년에 열린 국제 학술 대회에서 여러 학자들이 『유다 복음서』에서 유다가 긍정적인 영웅이 아니라, 부정적인 악한이라고 주장하였다. 이 논문은 두 견해를 참조하여 『유다 복음서』의 내용을 분석하고, 어떤 견해가 『유다 복음서』를 이해하는데 더 도움이 되는지 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 전통주의자들의 주장과 달리 『유다 복음서』의 목적은 유다를 복권하는 것이 아니라 수난의 재구성을 통해서 원정통 교회를 비판하는 것이었고, 『유다 복음서』에서 유다는 영웅이 아니라 비극적인 인물이었음을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
In 2006, the Gospel of Judas was released to the world. The ‘traditionalists’ who led the restoration and translation of this Gospel claimed that Judas was the most outstanding disciple and intimate companion of Jesus, and his betrayal was a sacred work in the Gospel of Judas. This argument was evaluated as suggesting a new perspective in understanding the formation and development of Christianity in the first and second centuries. However, only a few months after the publication of the Gospel of Judas, an objection over the interpretations of the traditionalists was raised. Those who are called revisionists claimed that Judas was presented in the Gospel of Judas as evil Daimon, that Jesus’ teaching about him was a tragic thing, and that his betrayal was not made by Jesus’ request but by the wicked god. This paper examined the contents of the Gospel of Judas by comparing the two views. I argued that the opinion of traditionalists should be abandoned because the premise of them is wrong. The reason is that the purpose of the Gospel of Judas is not the restoration of Judas but the reconstruction of the Passion. The Gospel of Judas is attempting to reconstruct the Passion to attack the disciples of Jesus. The restoration of Judas in the middle of the second century does not accord with this purpose. After all, in the Gospel of Judas, Judas is not a hero but a tragic figure.
