Abstract

The Prometheus myth is a story which gives us overwhelming inspiration. Prometheus is admirable because he symbolizes the human spirit struggling with much pain, provides an archetypal image for exploring human civilization, and is an exemplar encouraging us to overcome class conflict in the Marxist sense. This paper aims to investigate how the Prometheus myth is received and transformed in the tragedy genre by analyzing and comparing the epic of Hesiod and the tragedy of Prometheus Bound. Especially it explores how Prometheus is remodeled and reshaped as both an archetype and an exemplar. The results of the above-mentioned investigation can be summarized as follows. (1) Prometheus does not belong to the same rank as Zeus as the son of Titan, but is raised to Titan’s status. So the conflict between the old (Prometheus) and the new (Zeus) generations stands in the middle of tragedy. (2) Prometheus is reshaped as a son of Gaia or Ge or Themis and as a divinity having prophetic power. Oppressed by the mighty power of Zeus, Prometheus possesses knowledge of the secret of Zeus’ downfall and resists against Zeus’ tyrannical regime. Zeus’ prevailing situation can be reversed, and this potentiality is designed to form the core of the dramatic tension. This means that the conflict and the resulting tension between physical and spiritual power are allegorically dramatized. (3) Prometheus is not a trickster hero who brought humans misery by stealing fire and invoking Zeus’s anger, but a great benefactor who saved humans from total destruction and taught humans the techniques and intelligence which precede human civilization. This remodeled and reshaped Prometheus embodies Zeitgeist and provides a paradigm by showing an exemplary attitude and practicing exemplary action. In conclusion, Prometheus can be seen as a tragic hero who sends the message that pessimism should be overcome by optimism, the adherence to tradition by the progress of knowledge, and tyranny by democracy.
