Abstract
Prometheus, the hero of Greek mythology known as rebel, traitor, cultural hero, and protector of mankind, suffered severe punishment for the theft of Zeus’ fire for the humankind. The myth of Prometheus, which is more complicated and has more numerous contents than any other Greek myths, can also be seriously interpreted. From the time of Hesiod until modern times, many western literary scholars have changed and reproduced the myth of Prometheus according to their cultural background. In the Boeotian epic poet Hesiod’s(8C B.C) two epic poems, Theogony and Works and Days, Hesiod described Prometheus as a trickster. In the Theogony, he described the human isolation from God caused by Prometheus’ deceit, and also in his Works and Days, Hesiod described hard work and a weary life as punishment which was the result of Prometheus’ crime. So to say Hesiod thought Prometheus initiated the tragic event which characterized and regulated the condition of civilized and social humanity, vice, deceases and adversity. This thesis is trying to closely examine, through the semantic analysis of the text and socio-cultual analysis, the reflection of social aspects and cultural aspects in the Prometheus myth and the reason of Hesiod’s calling Prometheus a trickster. In conclusion, in 8C B.C, the image of Prometheus the conveyor of fire reflected on the epic poet is well reflected in the realist Greek’s view of God and humanity. Prometheus, viewed in the eye of the epic poet praising the ideology of the aristocracy, was a cultural icon of the archaic age.
