Abstract

The essence of Cicero’s idea of humanism and the community of human species in the context of On Duties is, even though it gives a stoic appearance to its readers, neither the same inner emotion among the members of that community such as universal love and friendliness nor fraternalism based on it. That idea of Cicero in this text lies, rather, in a sharing of social values and beneficial ones originated from reasoning and language. The human community is in some sense, to put it in a challenging expression, a benefit community. Indeed, a condition for one to be entitled to enter this community is for her to have a virtue. Yet this virtue is not something internalized within her regardless of any interaction with other human beings around her on some actual problems of life, but a kind of social virtue, which is to be operated and defined under an action-based interactive relationship between her and other people. On the ground that this virtue, if separated from beneficial values, can neither be understood nor activated, the community of people who are sharing it is a benefit community as well as moral one. The aim Cicero has in view through On Duties is both to arrive at appreciation of a tension between stoic conception of morality in a rigorous sense on the one hand and the non-moral conception of benefit, unavoidable one for fulfillment of life, on the other hand, and to find and show an intelligible and practicable connecting string between these two conceptions.
