Abstract

This study aims at providing philosophical foundations of the debate since the debating will be more necessary in our society. I began with Cicero’s humanitas as a basis of Cicero’s ethical, educational thoughts. Cicero created humanitas by uniting Greek culture and Roman virtues. Then I introduced Cicero’s De Oratore in which Cicero set doctus orator as his ideal of education. The doctus orator should have a thorough degree of knowledge including philosophy and rhetoric. Crassus in the dialogue, mouthpiece of Cicero, insists on the nature of eloquence that is a kind of art which discerns human beings from other creatures. Then I analyzed Cicero’s De Oratore as an excellent example of the debate concerning the nature of eloquence. Cicero himself belongs to Academic Skepticism which believes that everything must be argued and no results can be absolute. Thus, Cicero confirms that the debate admits of multiplex ratio and that there are better, more probable results by discussing competing opinions. Finally, I proposed a possibility of civic education by taking Cicero’s way of the debate.
