이 논문은 교육을 탐구하는 일은 기본적으로 지식의 성격을 이해하는 일로부터 시작되어야 한다는 점을 염두에 두고, 지식이라는 것은 서양 전통에서 어떻게 규정되었는지를, 특히 고대 헬라스적 맥락에서 탐구하는 것을목적으로 한다. 고대 헬라스 학문 전통은 대체로 소크라테스에서 플라톤으로 전승되는 ‘철학적’ 전통과 소피스트들에 의해 전개된 수사학적 전통으로 구성된다. 본문의 제Ⅱ장은 우선은 플라톤과 이소크라테스의 지식관을 다루기 전의 예비적 논의로서, 인간 삶을 학문의 대상으로 하게 된 계기를 소크라테스와 초기 소피스트들의 사상을통해서 재조명한다. 고대 헬라스 철학은 원래 인간 삶이 아닌 자연계를 대상으로 한 것이었지만, 기원전 5세기중엽 아테네 사회에서 소피스트들과 소크라테스가 등장하고 그들 간에 치열한 논쟁이 이루어지면서 ‘인간학’으로전환된다. 이 장에서는 이 일이 어떻게 전개되었는지, 이들 사이에 어떤 의견 차이가 있었는지를 다룬다. 제Ⅲ장에서는 소크라테스를 계승한 플라톤의 이데아론과 그것에 비추어 본 지식의 성격, 그리고 그렇게 규정된 지식의탐구 방법으로서의 변증법적 사유가 무엇인지를 기술한다. 그리고 제Ⅳ장에서는 수사학자 이소크라테스의 지식에대한 관점을 플라톤의 그것과 대비시켜 논의한다. 두 학자의 관점 차이는 기본적으로 도덕적, 정치적 활동 등으로 이루어지는 인간 삶의 성격을 보는 관점 차이에서 발생한다. 마지막으로 제Ⅴ장에서는 두 사람의 그와 같이상이한 관점을 우리는 어떻게 받아들여야 할지가 결론적으로 논의된다.
Abstract
This essay assumes that it should begin from understanding the nature of knowledge to study education, and investigates how knowledge was defined in the context of the Western tradition, especially in the Ancient Greek academic tradition. The Ancient Greek tradition basically consists of the ‘philosophical’ tradition from Socrates to Plato on the one hand and the Rhetorical tradition of the Sophists. In chapter Ⅱ, the author explores how human activities and life became the subject of academic learning, by revisiting the views of Socrates and the Sophists, as a preliminary step for more substantial study of Plato and Isocrates. The Ancient Greek philosophy originally studied physical world, not that of humans, however it transforms into the ‘study of humans’ as the Sophists and Socrates appeared in Athens and disputed with each other on the topics such as the possibility of the absolute existence of knowledge. How their debates continued and concluded is the main topic of the chapter. In chapter Ⅲ, Plato’s theory of ‘Idea’ and the nature of knowledge illuminated from it, and the method of study called the ‘dialectics’ are discussed. And in chapter Ⅳ, Isocrates’s view of knowledge from his perspective of Rhetoric, compared with that of Plato, is discussed. The contrast between the two philosophers’ views should be found in the difference of their views concerning human life consisting of the moral and political activities. How we should deal with those differences is discussed in the final chapter.
