Abstract

There is general agreement that the concept of ‘will’ as an independent psychic element which is the motivational force of human action is absent from ancient Greek philosophy, at least in the classical period. In this study, I draw attention to Aristotle’s concept of boulêsis, which played an important role in the formation and development of the concept of will. The Latin term ‘voluntas’ designating ‘will’ in the Christian theological tradition is, since Cicero, the standard translation of the Greek ‘boulêsis’. Thomas Aquinas, often credited with completing a systematic Christian doctrine of the will, relied on Aristotle’s concept of boulêsis as a rational desire to establish his concept of will as rational desire. In this perspective, the study of Aristotle’s boulêsis can shed some light on the origin and development of the concept of will in the history of Western Philosophy. The aim of this study is to elucidate in what sense Aristotle’s boulêsis, usually rendered as ‘wish’, is a rational desire. The main focus is on the question of whether wish belongs to the rational part of the soul or to the non-rational part. This question has been an object of considerable scholarly debate. Some attribute wish to the rational part of the soul, while claiming that wish is not only a rational desire, but also the desire of reason. Others, by contrast, ascribe wish to the non-rational part of the soul, arguing that wish is rational in the sense that it follows on the exercise of reason, but is not itself an exercise of reason. According to the former interpretation, Aristotle accepts the Platonic tripartition of soul or its bipartitional version and acknowledges, like Plato, that the rational part of the soul has its own desire as an independent source of motivation. I argue against this ‘Platonist’ interpretation in favor of the latter interpretation. For this purpose, I go through all the relevant references and passages in Aristotle’s works. In particular, I take Aristotle’s critique of Plato’s tripartition of the soul under closer scrutiny. Many scholars rightly point out that Aristotle’s statements are not consistent. But there is no evidence of the Platonist view, with the exception of one passage in the Topics, his earliest work, written during his time at the Academy, apparently under Plato’s influence. This shows that the anti-Platonist view is Aristotle’s considered view.
