<국가> 335b-e 논변에 관한 일고찰-소크라테스는 폴레마르코스를 어떻게 설득했는가?-

이 글에서는 국가 335b-e에서 소크라테스가 정의를 기술에 유비하면서 폴레마르코스를 논박할 뿐 아니라, 기술과의 유비로부터 정의의 기능을 다루는 일면을 고찰한다. 소크라테스는 ‘음악술과 승마술에 의해 그 기술에 반하는 결과가 생기지 않는 것처럼, 정의에 의해 정의에 반하는 결과가 생기지 않는다’는 논변을 펼친다. 이때 기술과의 유비는 ‘정의에 의해’의 의미에 대해 ‘기술에 의해’의 의미로 해석할 필요를 시사한다. 논자는 테크네 유비에서 소크라테스가 주시한 기술의 특징을 기술의 ‘기능’(ergon)으로 다룰 수 있는 일면을 탐색한다. 소크라테스가 논변에서 부각시킨 것은 ‘기술에 의해’ 기술의 ‘기능(ergon)’과 반대되는 결과가 도출될 수 없다는 점이다. 소크라테스가 ‘기능’을 중점적으로 다룬다는점에 주목할 적에 다음의 시사점을 고찰할 수 있다. (1) 폴레마르코스가 제시한 정의(justice) 규정은 기술로서 부적합하다. (2) 왜냐하면 ‘친구에게 이롭게 하고, 적에게 해롭게 한다’는 건 행위자의 친분 관계에 따라 ‘상반되는 결과를 도모하는 수단적 행위’에 불과할 뿐 기술로서의 일정한 기능(ergon)을 결여하기 때문이다. (3) 따라서 폴레마르코스의 정의 규정은 ‘기술로서의 정의’로서 받아들이기에 부적합하다는 점에서 논박될 수 있다. (4) 소크라테스가 폴레마르코스를 논박하면서 정의가 기술이 아님을 보여준다고 볼 수 없다.
Abstract
Socrates not only refutes Polemarchus by the analogy of justice with arts, but also assumes the function of justice from the analogy. At 335b-e in Republic, he argues that justice is not to produce results contrary to the function of justice just as music and horsemanship is not to produce results contrary to the function of the art. When paying attention to Socrates’ emphasis on the function used by the analogy, the difference between functions and results by actions reveals itself. Appreciating the difference, the following implications can be considered. (1) Polemarchus’ conception of justice is not suitable as a technē. (2) Because ‘benefiting friends and harming enemies’ are just ‘instrumental actions for opposite results’ which provoked by the social relationship of agents without its single function. (3) Socrates argued that Polemarchus’ definition was inadequate to be a technē, but he did not deny justice as technē.
