Abstract
This article argues that there is a continuity between the notions of justice, suggested by Cephalus and Polemarchus in Book 1 of Plato's Republic, and the justice of the Fine City, proposed by Socrates in Book 2. The traditional Greek idea of justice, proposed by Cephalus and Polemarchus, is closely related to repaying one’s debts and having one’s own share. Socrates develops such a traditional idea into the ideal system of the Fine City, where all the citizens rely on each other by doing one’s own works. This principle of justice as paying each other’s debts was widely accepted by the ordinary Ancient Greeks like Cephalus and Polemarchus, and justified by Socrates. Even the philosopher-king, one of the citizens of the Fine City, should repay her debts by ruling and making the city similar to the reality as much as possible. Only when every citizen of the City pays her debts, Plato argues, the city becomes a single-minded beautiful community and everyone in it lives a happy life.
