Abstract

This paper analyzes Socrates’ dialogues with two interlocutors, Gorgias and Polus in Plato’s Gorgias. The focus of analysis will be laid on the process, how the rhetoric fails to be qualified as a craft(techne) and the implication of this failure. Most part of the discussion between Socrates and Gorgias is dedicated to examine whether the rhetoric could be seen as a technē or not. This part of dialogue, therefore, does not seem to treat what the Gorgias’ rhetoric is but rather what the rhetoric is not. Moreover, the process of the judgment that the rhetoric is not a kind of crafts but something inferior to it is another process of judging that the rhetoric lacks of certain power and condition which make its power reliable, despite of its claim of influence. The negation that the rhetoric is the possessor of power is possible in that there is other speech which has true power and that also there is a standard which bespeaks the nature of the speech. The technē plays the model of what has true power in the Socrates’ dialogue with Gorgias and Polus. By establishing the technē as a standard, what is established also as a power in the other way where the rhetoric is powerful and influential is established as well. It will be mainly pursued and examined in this paper that on where what has power in the other and true way is based and in what point it is said to have true power.
