초록

This article seeks to pinpoint parallels between Agrippina Minor and Nero in Apuleius’ The Golden Ass. In the tale of “Cupid and Psyche,” one of the book’s most celebrated episodes, Venus and Cupid, though secondary characters, draw attention through their unusual and absurd relationship. The study posits that this absurdity alludes to the historical dynamic between Agrippina Minor and Nero. Four thematic parallels are identified: (1) a domineering mother, (2) a mother’s attempt at incest with her son, (3) matricide, and (4) a mother’s control over her son’s wife. By analyzing such literary transition, the article demonstrates how Apuleius transformed historical narratives into sophisticated literary devices.

Abstract

The study posits that this absurdity alludes to the historical dynamic between Agrippina Minor and Nero. Four thematic parallels are identified: (1) a domineering mother, (2) a mother’s attempt at incest with her son, (3) matricide, and (4) a mother’s control over her son’s wife. By analyzing such literary transition, the article demonstrates how Apuleius transformed historical narratives into sophisticated literary devices.
