이 글은 2세기 소설 작가 루키우스 아풀레이우스의 변신 (Metamorphoses) 혹은 황금 당나귀 (Asinus Aureus) 4-6권에 등장하는 ‘프시케와 쿠피도 이야기’를 중심으로 작품의 문헌사를 추적하고, 문헌사적 변화가 르네상스 시기 해당 주제를 대상으로 한 미술 작품들의 변화와 어떤 연결고리를 갖는지 살펴보고자 한다. 문헌사 연구에서는 아풀레이우스의 원작과 보카치오의 초기 원고 및 추가 집필본의 차이를 비교하고, 이후 인쇄 기술과 번역본의 등장을 통해 작품의 영향력이 확장되는 과정을 살핀다. 미술사 연구에서는 르네상스 전기와 전성기 및 후기, 그 이후를 구분하여 먼저 피렌체의 카소네와 스팔리에라 패널을, 그 다음 라파엘로를 중심으로 한 회화 전통과 주사위의 장인에서 시작하는 판화 및 태피스트리 전통을, 마지막으로 개별 작가의 개성과 사조에 따라 다양하게 변모하는 작품들을 검토한다. 이를 통해 문헌학과 미술사학 사이의 유기적 연구의 필요성을 보이고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper focuses on the story of Psyche and Cupid from books 4-6 of Lucius Apuleius’ Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass (Asinus Aureus), to trace the history of the text and examine its correlation with artistic representations during the Renaissance. The analysis starts with a comparison between Apuleius’s original text and Boccaccio’s two revisions, followed by an investigation into the expansion of the story through publication of printed editions and translations. To examine the artistic development of the narrative, it starts with the fifteenth century Florentine panels of Cassone and Spalliera, then looks at the painting tradition with Raphael and the print and tapestry tradition with Master of the Die in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. It finishes by discussing changes in style and perferred themes in later times. In doing so, this interdisciplinary study weaving together literature and art illuminates enduring appeal of the story of Psyche and Cupid across diverse epochs.
