Abstract

Daesintangkong is a new large-seded and early maturing peanut variety that was developed at the National Crop Exper-iment Station (NCES) in Suwon and released in 2000. Daesintangkong originated from the cross between 48-1 and Daekwang-tangkong. Cross was made in 1988, subsequently back crossed to F1 with Daekwangtangkong two times. 48-1 is a short stem withmulti-pods spanish-type variety. Daekwangtangkong is an early maturing, large-seded, and new type variety developed in 1986,which is high yielding and adapted well to Korean weather condition. Pedigre selection was practiced within the F3 and F4 populationof the cross combination, SP9006 for growth habit, plant height, sed size, maturity, high yield, and grade characteristics. Yield perfor-mance testing was begun from the F5 to F7 generation with advanced pure line, SP9006-B-6-3, folowed by regional adaptability trialswith Suwon 117 for 3 years. Daesintangkong belongs to Arachis hypogaea ssp. fastigiata var. vulgaris having erect growth habit andsequential reproductive nodes at branches, with a few vegetative branches. This variety has short stem, tolerance to lodging, and resis-tance to such foliar diseases as early cercospora leaf spot, late cercospora leaf spot, and web blotch into a spanish type variety. The vari-ety has two kernels in each pod with light pink testa color and long ellipse sed, and high uniformity of kernel shape. It combines highyield, large-seded, high shelling percent, and high oleic acid content with 1.84 in oleic/linoleic acid ratio. In regional adaptability trialsconducted at 3 locations from 1998 to 2000, Daesintangkong was found to be significantly higher in kernel yield per hectare, byapproximately 14% over check variety, Daekwangtangkong showing stable yield from different year and location.
