1892년 프랑스뿐만 아니라 유럽 최초로 번역된 불역본(佛譯本) 『춘향전』 Printemps parfumé는 당대 프랑스 문학계에서 활동하고 있던 소설가 보엑스(Boex) 형제가 로니(J.-H. Rosny)라는 필명으로 번역하여 출판한 작품이다. 한국어를 할 수 없었던 이 프랑스 소설가가 『춘향전』이라는 한국어 소설을 프랑스어로 옮길 수 있게 한 조력자가 홍종우이며, 그 또한 당시 불어가 유창하지 않은 상황에서 일본어 통역의 도움을 받으며 완성한 번역작업인 것이다. 그리고 이렇게 탄생한 Printemps parfumé는 홍종우가 3년 후 불역하게 되는 『심청전』과 함께 개작 양상이 가장 심한 한국 고소설 번역본 중 하나가 된다. 본고는 이와 같은 프랑스판 『춘향전』의 개작 이유를 프랑스문학이라는 현지의 번역장 안에서 고찰하여, 고소설 번역 양상에 대한 새로운 이해의 가능성에 접근하고자 한다. 즉, 프랑스판 『춘향전』을 프랑스어로 쓰인 하나의 ‘외국문학텍스트’라는 관점에서 접근하여, 불역본의 새로워진 ‘춘향’ 형상에 주목하고, 이를 프랑스문학의 흐름 속에서 역자의 문학적 성향과 함께 조명하고자 하는 것이다. 아리스토텔레스 및 호라티우스 시학에서 요구하는 등장인물의 고귀한 품격, 그리고 프랑스문학사에서 면면히 이어오는 그러한 요청에 대한 응대의 흐름이 본고의 논거가 될 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims at investigating the Printemps parfumé as a foreign literary text. The Printemps parfumé is estimated not as a translation but as an imitation : the result of the translation in the Printemps parfumé is different from the original history, for example, I-Toreng is disguised as a woman for approaching to Tchoun-Hyang. The adaptation of the Printemps parfumé can be understood in the champs of the french literarure where the text will be read as a literary text in french. The poetics of Aristoteles and Horatius about the high virtue of characters support this explanation : all the changes in the Printemps parfumé is focused on the perfection of Tchoun-Hyang. The translation or an adaptation of the Printemps parfumé is therefore a sort of the creation that produces the another text in the change of the culture. So it is necessary to read the Printemps parfumé as a foreign literary text. This aspect is also found in the translation of Le Bois sec refleuri that will be investigated in the next article.
