초록

이 글은 한국학 고전의 정본 사업과 관련해서, 정본의 중요성과 정본 사업의 시급함을 논하는 것이다. 이와 관련해서 이 글에서는 먼저 서양고전문헌학의 사례를 소개하고, 다음으로 세 가지 사례, 즉 ① 대표적인 한국 고전인 『춘향전』, ② 돈황학의 문헌들, ③ 이중환의 『택리지』에 대해서 분석하였다. 그리고 마지막으로, 서양 사례를 중심으로 국가가 정본 사업을 지원하는 근거를 밝혔다. 결론적으로, 이 글에서는 여러 사례 분석을 통해서 정본 사업의 중요성과 더불어 국가적으로 더 이상은 미뤄두어서는 안 되는 연구라는 점을 강조하고자 한다. 물론 이 글을 쓰게 된 동기는, 요즘 한국 고전은 물론 동양 고전학계에서도 원전 복원과 고전 번역 및 주해 작업이 활발하게 진행되고 있는데, 이에 대한 참조 사례를 제공하기 위함이다. 또한 이 글이 서양고전문헌학의 방법론과 동양고전학 및 한국고전학의 방법론의 비교를 촉진하는 한 계기가 되길 바란다.

Abstract

In this paper, I argue the importance and urgency of the research project for publishing critical editions of Korean classics. First, I introduce a few examples of transmission of Greek and Latin manuscripts in order to demonstrate how to follow back the threads of transmission and how to restore texts as closely as possible to their original form. Second, I analyze three texts, Chunhyangjeon(『春香傳』), Dunhung Nestorian Docu󰠏ments, Taekliji(『택리지』) as case studies for further emphasis on the urgency of critical editions in Korean classics. Finally, I provide some reasons why critical editions for Korean classics should be supported by the Korean Government, especially through comparative case studies in western countries. In short, this paper is a short outline about the philological methodology in classical scholarship. Its aims are also simple. On the one side, this outline can be a useful guideline for publishing of critical editions in Korea. On the other hand, the paper might ignite future comparative discussions between the philological methodology of “classicalscholarship” of the “Western world(Europe, USA)” and that of “the Eastern world(China, Japan, Korea).”
