Abstract

This paper discusses the future direction of the digitization of Korean ancient classical texts, reviewing current issues and also what has been achieved in the digitization of Chinese ancient classical texts. The Korean digitization project is a large-scale, state-driven program which has contributed to the pre- servation of cultural heritage and improved public accessibility. This paper examines issues related to data accuracy, user-level concerns, and the roles of creators and workers. There is considerable variation, but the most significant problem is that research institutions, which should be focused on academic research, have become the primary bodies responsible for the data infra- structure. This detracts from their ability to carry out research and to nurture the next generation of academics. By contrast, in the Chinese project, data digitization has focused on automation and efficiency, and the process has been kept separate from research. This policy of separation is worth con- sidering for the Korean project. Furthermore, after two decades of accu- mulating data, it is now urgent to review, standardize, enhance, and open up this resource. This will enable innovative approaches to the reuse of the data, thus establishing a virtuous cycle. It is recommended that the stages of electronic editions be considered, that the FAIR principles be adopted, and that research and data construction be established as separate roles. Additionally, greater attention should be devoted to the cultivation of key personnel and to promoting academic development, thus enhancing professionalism and technical expertise
