Abstract
This paper aims to examine Lee Byeongdo’s research on ancient Korean history during the colonial period. His body of work has been evaluated as both the legacy of colonial historiography and the foundation of empirical historiography. Noteworthily, his research achievements rival those of the metropolitan academic circles, and they have cumulatively built a framework that is distinct from that of Japanese historians. Lee traversed the limits of the methodology of empirical historiography and ventured into the non-empirical realms of intuition and inspiration. He laid the academic groundwork for his historical studies at Waseda University and began his career as a historian in earnest upon returning to colonial Korea. In his early years, he failed to construct an independent logic and thus largely followed the arguments of Japanese historians. However, as he interacted with various Japanese researchers, he began developing his unique perspective. Notably, in his academic work on the Four Commanderies of Han, he criticizes the arguments of Joseon-era Silhak scholars and contemporary Japanese historians and proposes a novel adjustment to their locations and scale. Lee’s research, exemplified by the theory of Jinbeon-gun’s relocation to the south, emphasizes the significance of Jin-guk, a powerful political confederation that existed in the southern Korean peninsula. This research served as a counterpoint to the academic imperialism of the era. However, after liberation, Lee Byeongdo failed to advance distinctive research in the field and instead aligned his arguments with the needs of the state and nation.
