Abstract
Decollectivization of collective farms and the expansion of peasant farms are the central features of post-socialist agricultural reform in Eastern Europe. However the actual process of decollectivization in each country of the region has been promoted or constrained by several factors including historical heritages, reform policies, and concrete methods of decollectivization. This paper investigates the progress of agricultural reform and the pattern of peasant farm expansion in four countries of Central Europe, namely Hungary, Poland, Czech, and Slovakia. This study shows that despite the substantial increase of peasant farms in Hungary, Czech, and Slovakia, the dominant status of large-scale collective farms continued, in varying degrees, throughout the 1990s. In Poland, however, agricultural land remained highly fragmented for historical reasons.
