Abstract
This study aims to sociologically understand the reality and characteristics of Community Supported Agriculture in the Northwestern United State and draw implications for sustained growth of that from these findings. To do this, I focused on CSA operators in the Portland Metropolitan Area, Oregon. The major results in the research are as follows. Firstly, There are now few CSA farms which members provide their labors in farming activities, as opposed to those in the early stages of CSAs. Today, CSAs in the Northwest are structurally characterized by some serious problems such as absence of common experiences through farm-work among members and weak solidarity, exclusion of low-income families from CSAs and a middle class bias. That’s the reality. Secondly, CSAs are not farming that CSA operators only devote themselves to the pursuit of non-economic values. CSAs want to achieve community-oriented and environmentally-friendly farming and take count of economic sustainability for it at the same time. This is another characteristics of CSAs in the northwest. Thirdly, most of CSA farms don’t have official organic certificate, doing organic agriculture. The reasons for this situation are that they don’t need to get official certificate owing to their members’ credit on them and they think there are serious shortcomings in current certification system, too. We can draw important suggestions for sustained growth of the northwestern CSAs from these findings of this research. That is, they are earnest reflections on inherent values of CSA and rearmament in consciousness from both sides of CSA operators and members, their continuous efforts for re-introduction and spread of CSA members’ work-share system, government policies for establishment of public education organization for CSA members, government grant for CSA farms, an epoch-making improvement of organic certification system.
