Abstract

This study aims to examine whether the effects of obesity on self-esteem differ depending on developmental stages and gender. Previous studies assumed that the effects of obesity on self-esteem is fixed. Since self-esteem is formed not by absolute status but by comparison with other people and the adolescent's social comparison skill develops in multifaceted order, the effects of obesity should be tested on developmental perspective. Also, the effect of obesity which is related to appearance can be more affective to women's self-esteem than men's. Using data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study, regression was done involving 733 elementary school students, 544 middle students and 489 high school students. Major findings are as follows. (1) The effects of obesity on self-esteem were significant only for middle school students. (2) The effects of obesity on self-esteem vary by gender only for high school students, indicating that female high school students are more vulnerable than males. Based on these results, we discussed implications for healthy psychosocial development for adolescents.
