Abstract

In recent years, under the influence of YouTube, social media, and mobile devices, the status and function of a journalistic profession have been rapidly changing. The present study investigates the changes in journalistic professionalism that have emerged due to digitization by analyzing relevant research trends. The results show that there is a recent tendency not to include journalists in the professional groups in South Korea, the United States, and Europe. The main reasons are the de-boundedness of media jobs and open participation of the audience due to digitization. According to the results, digital platforms (e.g., Google, Facebook, Apple, and Kakao), which combine the production, distribution, and consumption of information, have spread nationally and globally. These platforms facilitate news collection and access to information, providing channels to transfer this information to the public. Accordingly, the amount of audience- generated content has exploded. Journalists, on the other hand, have lost the jurisdiction of exclusively holding and controlling press work, making it difficult to maintain professional boundaries. Furthermore, the crisis of journalism has been exacerbated by the dilution of journalist identity, increased multimedia chores, and weakened public services in news reporting. The results also highlight the merits of audience content, such as vividness, immediate sharing with other users, social influence, public service, and convenience of production. In this context, journalists have sought to transform journalistic occupations into digital environments by accepting the audience’s content to the news. The significance of the present study lies in arguing that it is ‘technology,’ not ‘content,’ that shocks journalistic professionalism and resets journalists’ fate.
