Abstract
U.S. politicians have used the expression “axis of evil” when referring to North Korea, while the United States has been called “barbaric” and “imperialist” in socialist Korea. Despite the end of the Cold War the two countries have remained hostile toward each other. This study explores the history of emotions in and between the United States and North Korea, from the Korean War (1950-1953) to the present day. The political elites of the two nations have attempted to manipulate the feelings of their populations, by intensifying or moderating enmity, amity, anxiety, and happiness, in order to justify their foreign policy positions toward one another. Two types of texts were analyzed to characterize this process: books on strategy and history by the U.S. security elite, and North Korean novels which describe America’s political leaders. In effect, these texts were used as a means of “sentimental education” through which the elites imposed specific feelings upon their populations for political purposes.
