Abstract
This study explored the disaster rescue site and the nature of the phenomena that occurred afterwards using in-depth interviews with 10 firefighters who were put into the Osong disaster site and Giorgi’s phenomenological and qualitative research method. As a result of the analysis, 140 central meanings, 38 revealed themes, 9 essential themes, and 4 essentials were appeared. The essentials were ‘facing cold reality’, ‘no protective device’, ‘loss of initiative to experience’, and ‘psychological overload.’ And the essential themes are were ‘internal wet wall’, ‘disaster rescue barrier’, ‘standing in the position of the weak’, ‘disaster trauma’, ‘political consumables’, ‘social death’, ‘survival is the best thing’, ‘confusion in the meaning of existence’, and ‘complex trauma’. For the study participants, the disaster rescue site was a reality that they had to embrace structural limitations, instinctive fear, and complex emotions even though they responded with a psychological ownership consciousness, and they experienced complex trauma due to retraumatization and moral damage in the process of successive social controversies and legal procedures. This study examined difficulty in full recovery without understanding the field practitioner and social protection, and also it provided basic data for psychological and institutional support by understanding the nature of disaster trauma and exploring traumatic experiences in a social context, and the study implications were presented.
