이 글의 목적은 현대 감정론의 지형 속에서 감정에 대한 칸트의 통찰이 갖는 현재적 의미를 고찰하는 데 있다. 현대 감정론에서 제기되는 주요한 쟁점 중 한 가지는 다음 두 가지 물음을 통해 특징지을 수 있다. 첫째, 감정을 신체적 느낌과 동일시하는가, 둘째, 감정을 마음의 지향적 상태로 보는가? 이런 물음에 대해, 비인지주의는 감정을 느낌 상태로 간주하고, 인지주의는 감정을 지향성을 갖는 것으로 본다. 이 글은 이와 같은 신체적 감정과 지향성이라는 두 가지 쟁점에 초점을 맞추었다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 이 글이 옹호하고자 하는 주장은 첫째 칸트 철학에서 감정은 전적으로 배제되지 않는다는 것이고, 둘째 감정에 대한 칸트의 통찰은 그의 체계적인(그리고 비판적인) 사유와 양립할 수 있으며, 또한 현대 감정론과도 양립할 수 있다는 것이다. 비인지주의 입장이 갖는 물질주의(materialism)적 경향을 고려한다면, 감정에 대한 칸트의 관점을 비인지주의로 보기는 어렵다. 감성과 이성의 관계에 대한 칸트 철학의 입장을 고려할 때, 칸트 철학은 현대의 인지주의에 가까운 것처럼 보인다. 그렇다고 칸트의 입장을 표준적인 인지주의라고 단정할 수는 없다. 왜냐하면 칸트는 감정을 논의하면서 언제나 그 신체적 성격을 함께 고찰하고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 칸트의 입장은 인지주의와 비인지주의가 서로 수렴하는 근자의 감정론의 방향에 비추어 볼 때 현재적이라고도 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This article aims at researching the point of re-reading Kant's philosophy in the topography of the contemporary theory of emotion. Through this, I wish to reveal Kant's subtler thought on emotion than it has been appreciated so far. This article is focused on two issues: bodily feeling and intentionality. In modern philosophy the research of emotion has been characterized through following two questions: first, whether emotions are identified with bodily feelings and second, whether emotions are seen as intentional state. According to these questions, the one regards emotions as feeling state (non-cognitivism), and the other as cognition (cognitivism). My main argument is that Kant doesn't exclude emotion at all, and his insight into emotion is compatible with his systematic (critical) thought and contemporary research of emotion. His position on this issue is closer to cognitivism (given his idealistic position it may be not possible that he is non-cognitivist). But he is not "the standard cognitivist". For his thoughts on emotions are always accompanied with thought on bodily feeling. Recently, two positions —above mentioned— compromises on two issues, that is, cognitivism recognizes bodily feelings and non-cognitivism makes effort to explain intentionality of emotion. Concerning these trends, Kant's thoughts on emotions nowadays suggest a lot of things.
