혐오에 대한 칸트의 기본적인 관점은 『인간학』에서 등장하는 “매우 강한 생명 감각”이라는 구절에서 간결하게 표현된다. 매우 강한 생명 감각으로서 혐오는 신체적 감정이며 감관에 의한 불쾌다. 칸트에게서 혐오는 또한 상상력에 의한 불쾌, 즉 미학적 감정이기도 하다. 혐오에 대한 최초의 근대 철학적 접근은 슐레겔로부터 멘델스존, 레싱 그리고 헤르더로 이어지는 미학에서의 혐오 논쟁을 통해 이루어졌다. 이 글에서는 칸트 철학에서 인간학적이고 미학적인 혐오가 갖는 의미를 논의했다. 감정, 특히 도덕 철학에서 연민과 같은 도덕 감정의 역할에 대한 칸트의 인색한 입장은 표준적이고 신스토아적 인지주의의 입장에서 보면 불만스럽다. 그러나 이 글에서는 도덕 감정에 대한 칸트의 신중한 입장이 혐오 옹호론과 회의론으로 양분된 도덕적 혐오 논의에서 또 다른 논의의 가능성을 제시할 수 있는지를 검토했다. 즉 칸트에게서 혐오 감정은 전적으로 신뢰할 수 있는 감정으로 간주되지 않지만 도덕적 갈등 상황에서 도덕적 행위의 동기를 제공하는 일정한 역할을 담당한다.
Abstract
This article discusses disgust in Kant’s philosophy concerning the topic of philosophy of emotion. Kant’s basic point of view on disgust is expressed succinctly in the phrase, “very strong vital sense.” As very strong vital sense, disgust is pathological emotion and displeasure by sensation. Disgust in Kant is displeasure by imagination, that is, aesthetic emotion, too. The first modern philosophical approach is done through Schlegel, Mendelssohn, Lessing and Herder. This article discusses the meaning of anthropological and aesthetic disgust. Standard and neo-stoic cognitivist regards Kant’s parsimonious position about emotion, especially, moral emotion like compassion in moral philosophy as unsatisfactory. But this article examines that Kant’s careful attitude in moral emotion is able to present another possibility between disgust advocates and disgust skeptics. That is, disgust in Kant philosophy is not regarded as fully reliable, but plays some role in giving incentive to an action at moral conflict.
