사회과 가치교육 접근법들에 대한 비판적 고찰 : 가치교육의 네 가지 배경원칙을 중심으로

우리나라 중등학교 사회과에서 가장 많이 사용되는 가치교육 접근법은 언어적 교훈주의 접근법이라 할 수 있으며, 이는 입시를 중심으로 편제되어 있는 우리의 교육현실에 의해 강요된 것으로 교사와 학생 모두에게 가치교육 방식에 대한 불만을 갖게 하는 원인이 되고 있다. 그러나 그렇다고 해서 현실적으로 교사나 학생이 언어적 교훈주의 접근법과 별개로 특별히 더 선호하는 접근법이 존재하는 것도 아니다. 상황이 이렇게 된 데에는 다양한 요인이 작용했겠지만, 교육현장에서 대안적으로 사용될 수 있는 사회과 가치교육 접근법들 자체가 전체적으로 만족스럽지 못한 것이 또한 중요한 요인 중의 한 자리를 차지하고 있지 않은가 한다. 본고에서는 이러한 현실을 반영하여 특정한 가치교육 접근법을 선정하여 옹호하는 방식이 아니라 가치교육에 반드시 반영되어야 하는 원칙들이 무엇인가를 먼저 탐구하고자 한다. 그리고 그에 근거하여 사회과에서 활용되고 있는 가치교육 접근법들을 전반적으로 평가하는 방식으로 기존 접근법들의 한계를 살펴볼 것이다. 궁극적으로는 이러한 한계들을 고려한 새로운 가치교육 접근법을 제시하는 데까지 나아가야 하겠지만, 본고에서는 일단 그것의 전 단계로서 가치교육의 네 가지 필요조건 - 다원주의의 원칙, 포괄적인 가치관 교육의 원칙, 종합적 인성․사회성 고려의 원칙, 수업 내용과 방법의 정합성의 원칙 – 과 그 활용가능성을 제시한 것으로 만족하고자 한다. 다만 말미에 필자가 생각하는 새로운 가치교육 접근법을 예시함으로써 논의의 전체적인 흐름과 지향점을 분명히 하고자 하였다.
Abstract
Didactic method is probably the most commonly used method of value education in secondary school social studies of South Korea. However, this is compelled by the stark reality of excessive competition for college entrance exams in South Korea. Therefore, most of teachers and students are not satisfied with this method. However, it does not seem that they want another method. This is because there are, apart from the external compulsion of college entrance exams, ethical, pedagogic flaws in other value education methods. These flaws are firstly due to the fact that there is no overriding theory in ethics. Cognitivism, for example, competes with noncognitivism in metaethics. Consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics are evenly matched in normative ethics. This situation makes it difficult to specify contents of value education. Moreover, value education might some logical problems in pedagogy. Approaches of value education are usually self-referential. That is, they are often ethical in itself. Therefore, they might contradict with contents of value education. It is also problematic in South Korea that value education has been provided only within classroom hours. Since classroom hours are, in South Korea, mostly allocated for studying for college entrance exams, teachers actually have no time to teach values with various methods. To suggest a new approach of value education is perhaps the best way to cope with those difficulties. However, I think that we need previously find out necessary conditions, which we consent to, for the new approach. Firstly, I propose four such conditions: the principle of pluralism, the principle of teaching of various value theories, the principle of comprehensive considerations of personal, social character, and the principle of internal coherence in a value education approach. Secondly, I criticize current value education approaches of social studies. Of course, these criticisms are based upon those principles. Finally, I briefly sketch my idea for the new approach of value education.
